Metro de Santiago claims world-first as PPA lines up 60% solar power

The Metro system in Santiago, Chile, is on track to become the world’s first to run mostly on solar power after striking a power-purchase agreement with PV group SunPower.

Metro de Santiago will buy 300GWh of power annually from the 100MW El Pelícano Solar Project, which SunPower will build for a 2017 start of operations.

The output will cover up to 60% of demand from the metro system, which carries 2.2 million passengers a day in Chile’s capital.

Chile has emerged as one of the world's solar development hotspots, with about 1.1GW
