Solarpack said the Granja Solar development, to be built by its local subsidiary Maria Elena Solar, will beat the $29.9/MWh secured by a project in Dubai earlier this year.

Granja Solar will enter service in the Tarapaca region in 2019, said Solarpack, which already operates four PV plants in the country.

The contract secured with the Chilean government is for 280GWh annually between the hours of 0800 and 1800.

Solarpack said: “This tender, in addition to reaffirming the commitment of Solarpack with Chile, also demonstrates the competitiveness of Solarpack and solar energy at offering the best price among the bidding companies.”

With its excellent insolation levels, Chile has emerged as one of the best development prospects in the global PV sector.

Previous regional auctions in Mexico and Peru have also delivered low solar power prices.

However, the Chilean tender results released this week were dominated by wind power, which came out top in all the bidding blocks.

Irish developer Mainstream Renewable Power had a particularly strong showing with 986MW of wind success.

The average price secured in the Chilean tender was $47.60/MWh.
