The SEC approved the new guidance on Wednesday, but made clear that its action is about clarifying existing disclosure rules on a topic of interest to public companies and investors, not making a judgment on climate change.
“We are not opining on whether the world’s climate is changing, at what pace it might be changing, or due to what causes,” states SEC chairman Mary Schapiro.
