US historic advisory council says no to Cape Wind project

With a decision on what would be the first US offshore wind project due this month, a key advisory council has recommended US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar not approve the Cape Wind project because it would cause “pervasive, destructive, and in the instance of seabed construction, permanent” effects on historic properties.

Salazar, who has pledged to take a final decision in April on the long-languishing development in Nantucket Sound, asked the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) to provide final comments that will inform his decision. He turned to the independent, federal advisory agency after talks among project developer, Cape Wind Associates LLC, and state and federal historic preservation officials – who are in consultation with two Native American tribes that vehemently oppose the project – reached an impasse.
