The country must shrink its present emissions 46% by 2030 – the halfway point between now and the target year of 2050 – requiring an almost complete decarbonisation of the power sector, which will be driven by massive renewables deployment, according to the CCC.
The CCC is required to submit five-yearly carbon budgets to Parliament as part of the UK’s legally binding target to cut its carbon emissions 80% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels.
