The UAE is competing to host Irena’s headquarters with Spain, the Netherlands and Germany, where the founding treaty was signed in January.
Irena, which has attracted 78 signatories and continues to gain momentum, is meant to be a counterweight to the International Energy Agency, seen by some as being beholden to fossil fuel-related interests and neglectful of renewable energy. Irena continues to lack the signatures of heavy-duty CO2 emitters such as the US, the UK, China and Australia.
