The Scandinavian country will allow the construction of up to 10 nuclear reactors at existing sites, the government says. New more efficient reactors will replace older generators.

Parliament had voted to close down all nuclear plants by 2010 following a referendum in 1980. Nuclear plants generate about 46% of Sweden’s electricity.

Sweden is also bumping up its investment in clean renewable energies, and now aims to get 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
