The global energy sector hacked up a record 31.6 gigatonnes (Gt) of CO2 last year, according to preliminary figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The 0.6% reduction in wealthy countries composing the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) was more than offset by the 6.1% growth among non-OECD nations.
China’s 9.3% jump contributed the most to the global increase, but IEA chief economist Fatih Birol stresses that China’s recent efforts in the climate arena should not be downplayed.
