Ontario, trumpeting the announcement Thursday, calls the projects “part of the largest green energy investment of its kind in Canadian history”.
Along with 112 megawatts (MW) of projects already awarded contracts under a microFiT programme last month, this latest round will generate $9bn in private sector investment, the province says. Some 20,000 direct and indirect jobs are also expected.
“In six short months the Feed-in Tariff program has delivered strong results and has more than exceeded our expectations,” states Colin Andersen, chief executive of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), which is responsible for the programme and will buy the resulting electricity.
