The money comes as part of the EU’s broader energy-related stimulus programme, and follows on the heels of €1.5bn of aid for offshore wind and carbon capture and storage projects finalised in December 2009. The Commission also carved out €1.4bn for gas-pipeline projects.

The package includes €110m for the ‘East-West’ interconnector being built between Ireland and Wales by EirGrid; €225m for a long-awaited link between the French and Spanish grids; €131m for lines connecting Sweden and the Baltic States; as well as money for subsea connections linking Malta and Sicily to continental Italy’s grid.
