The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a standard that would limit new power plants to 1,000 pounds of CO2 equivalent per megawatt hour of generation, effectively banning new coal plants without carbon capture and storage technology.
The new carbon pollution standard [PDF], for plants larger than 25MW, is in keeping with an ongoing trend in the US power sector away from coal and toward natural gas-fired generation, particularly with lower prices thanks to new domestic sources of gas.
