General Electric, NRG Energy and ConocoPhillips jointly committed $300m to form Energy Technology Ventures, which will make investments in around 30 companies in renewable energy, efficiency, smart grid, fossil fuels, emission controls, nuclear energy, water and biofuels, during the next four years.

The joint venture, unveiled Thursday, has made a trio of initial investments in Alta Devices, a solar PV company working on advanced materials production; Ciris Energy, developing coal-to-methane conversion technology; and CoolPlanetBioFuels, which seeks to use non-food feedstock.
