Last month Prime Minister Julia Gillard raised the ire of Australia’s renewables sector by proposing to gouge funds for solar energy and other low-carbon programmes to pay for damage wrought by the disastrous floods that battered the eastern part of the country earlier this year.
However, last week the Greens were able to secure guarantees that some A$360m ($361m) in proposed low-carbon funding cuts would not proceed, in exchange for their vote for the one-off flood levy.
