Amin, a Kenyan, was named interim director-general last October following the mysterious departure of his predecessor, former French diplomat Hélène Pelosse, who had held the top job since Irena’s founding in 2009.
Amin topped former Spanish State Secretary Pedro Marin by a vote of 76-36 for the director-general in the final act of Irena’s Preparatory Commission, which will now give way to a fully fledged General Assembly.
