Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) plans to deploy the US’s first utility-scale wave-energy converter (WEC) off the Oregon coast this summer after confidence-boosting sea trials in Scotland of its mightiest machine to date, the PowerBuoy 150.
Prospects for a planned 500kW version, the PB500, are looking rosier after the 150kW spar-like device passed operational checks of its structure, mooring system and power-generation potential with flying colours in the Moray Firth, northeast Scotland.
