In response to the disastrous floods that have racked eastern Australia in recent weeks, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has imposed a one-off tax on Australians earning more than A$50,000 a year, as well as a battery of spending cuts – most of them targeting the low-carbon sector.

The government estimates the floods will cost at least A$5.6bn, with most of the money needed to rebuild essential infrastructure.
