Reliable transmission lines and power sharing between countries will become imperative as Southeast Asia looks to generate more electricity from renewables, observers say.

A smarter grid is needed to revolutionise the region's current uni-directional transmission system to create an intelligent platform that is able to handle both large- and small-scale variable renewable sources.
