Japanese power giant JERA planted its flag in its domestic offshore wind market with plans for a 520MW project that would feature battery storage.

The fixed-bottom project is earmarked for a site off Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido using turbines up to 14MW, said JERA as it submitted plans under Japan’s environmental impact rules.

JERA said: “A storage battery is also planned to be installed in order to mitigate the effect on the power grid due to the output fluctuation of the wind power generators,” without giving further details.
