Breaking down methane inside a vacuum into its constituent elements — hydrogen and carbon — seems like an ideal solution, as the carbon cannot combine with oxygen in the air to create the greenhouse gas CO2.
This would mean that natural gas could continue to be used as the main source for hydrogen production, but without the production of greenhouse gases, eliminating the need for controversial carbon capture and storage.
