Facing relentless margin-tightening in an evermore competitive, auction-driven energy market, turbine makers GE, Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, Nordex and Enercon have each engineered innovative 5MW-plus machines that will significantly reduce wind’s levelised cost of energy (LCOE).

The OEMs are making a virtue of necessity. Developers are demanding turbines that can produce at nothing higher than €30 ($33.60) per MWh to win tenders and these new models are engineered to make the cut, outstripping 3MW and 4MW machines by 30-50% annual energy production (AEP).
