Auto giant Ford will use local-sourced wind power to help green its production in Michigan after a procurement deal with utility DTE.
Ford will buy 500GWh of renewable power to help cover consumption at its Dearborn Truck and Michigan Assembly plants, along with other facilities it operates in the state.
The automaker signed the deal under a DTE scheme called MIGreenPower, which matches consumption to wind and solar output in the state – and became the first corporate to sign up to the initiative.
The agreement keeps the plants, which make models including the F-150, Raptor and Ranger trucks, on track to be 100% renewable-powered by 2021, said Ford.
Traditionally coal-based DTE said in 2017 it would shift towards a 40% renewable power share by 2050, a goal requiring 6GW of new renewables – most of it onshore wind.
