Of all the transformations required by the energy transition, perhaps the most complete and complex will be that of distribution system operators (DSOs).

Historically, DSOs have performed a relatively simple role, ensuring that end users can be supplied with electricity coming in from large centralised power plants via the transmission grid.

But the DSOs’ role is evolving fast, and will soon become almost mind-boggling complex, requiring “radical change” in the way that DSOs function, according to a report released today by accountants EY and the European electricity industry association Eurelectric.
