India’s renewable energy industry was joined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in paying tribute to Tulsi Tanti, the founder and chairman of wind turbine group Suzlon Energy who died at the weekend aged 64.

Tanti, who died after a cardiac arrest, over two decades grew Suzlon to become a globally significant player in the wind industry.

Suzlon said: “With profound sadness, we inform you of the untimely demise of Shri Tulsi R Tanti, the founder, the chairman and managing director, often regarded as the father of the Indian renewable industry… on 1 October 2022.

“In this difficult time, the company continues to be supported by its highly experienced board of directors and senior management who are both able and committed to take Shri Tanti’s legacy forward and realise his vision for the company.”

Among the many paying tribute to Tanti was Prime Minister Modi, who said he “was a pioneering business leader who contributed to India’s economic progress and strengthened our nation’s efforts to further sustainable development”.

Suzlon has been through several financial ups and downs over the last decades, but has recently retrenched in its core Indian market where it plans to play in a key role in the massive green power ambitions set out by Modi’s government.
