Danish renewables major Orsted and institutional investor partner ATP have inked a deal with digital infrastructure and connectivity player GlobalConnect to shape their so-called North Sea Energy Island concept into a “backbone” in the future digitisation of northern Europe.

Through the agreement, Orsted and ATP aim to develop the energy island – a 10GW power hub pulling in electricity generated by as many as ten surrounding offshore wind farms and distributing it out to a number of countries in the region – as “an innovative and smart island and a centre of a green and digitally connected tomorrow” that will be central to the next phases of the regional energy transition at sea.
