Germany’s education and research ministry is providing a €60m ($67.8m) grant to developer Sunfire that aims for serial, automated production of high-temperature solid-oxide electrolysers (SOEC) and an industrial production at gigawatt scale of pressurised alkaline electrolysers.
The funding will speed up time-to-market of SOEC electrolysers, the company said. Sunfire and 15 associated partners will be receiving €33m to establish manufacturing processes of SOEC electrolysers, which by using off-heat from industrial processes require up to 30% less electricity from renewable energy sources than other technologies to produce a kilogram of hydrogen.
