Sweden’s government plans to ask state-owned transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnät to expand its power grid to the country’s territorial waters, in a move that could trigger a new wave offshore wind power in the Nordic country as most grid costs will be waived for developers.

The measure, which aims at boosting the country’s hitherto small offshore wind capacity in particular in southern Sweden and reduce costs for power producers, will be done through an amendment to the TSO’s official mission to also cover the offshore grid that will enter into force on January 1, 2022.
