The long dormant promise of floating vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) designs in offshore power production – on the drawing board, able to capture more energy from the resource than the market-dominating three-bladed models – have been a fresh tailwind, with a new UK study concluding VAWTs would “outcompete” the mainstream models now being built in their thousands for projects around the world.
