The announcement, made by the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum &  Energy, means that the Scandinavian country's utility, Statnett, who are partnering National Grid's interconnector business in the project, now have all the paperwork for the 740km-long seabed cable.

"This is tremendous news for us and our development partners Statnett," states Alan Foster, National Grid's director of European business.

"We've been working together on the NSN Link between the two countries for four years and [licence approval] is a signal that the Norwegian government is fully supportive of the project."
