Siemens Gamesa wind turbine collapses in South Korea
Turbine was one of 11 at ridgetop wind farm that came online less than two years ago
A Siemens Gamesa 4.7MW onshore wind turbine has collapsed in South Korea, waking nearby residents in the middle of the night who thought the tremors were from an earthquake.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday at the ridgetop Geumseongsan Wind Power Plant in South Korea’s southern Honam region.
The turbine was one of 11 installed at the site, which was commissioned in June 2023. Local companies Daemyoung Energy and Korea Southern Power developed the wind farm.
One local resident who lives in a village just under 2km away told Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper that they were awoken by the collapsing turbine in the middle of the night, with the vibrations it caused making them think it was an earthquake.
Siemens Gamesa said in a statement to Recharge: "No one was harmed in the incident and, as part of our routine procedure, a safety zone has been established around the turbine."
"We are currently investigating the cause of the incident. This kind of analysis will take some time, but we are in constant communication with the relevant stakeholders."
