The power purchase agreement (PPA) expands on existing contracts between the US geothermal specialist and Kenya's national power company that have underpinned the existing 48MW Olkaria III plant, perched on the side of Olkaria mountain in the Great Rift Valley.
Ormat says the expansion will come online in 2013 when the new plant is built next to the current facility. Kenya is pushing for a major expansion of geothermal energy as a way to secure a more stable supply of electricity in support of economic growth.
