German industrial conglomerate Thyssenkrupp has won a contract to deliver a 20MW green hydrogen electrolyser for the production of green ammonia to CF Industries’ Donaldsonville manufacturing complex in the US State of Louisiana.
The unit will use renewable power from the grid to produce green hydrogen which then will be converted to 20,000 tons per year of green ammonia at CF Industries existing ammonia plants at the site, and thereby start to decarbonise what today is the world’s largest ammonia production facility.
Green ammonia can be used as storage and transport fuel for renewable energy, or as direct clean fuel, for example in maritime transportation. Start of production at Donaldsonville is expected in 2023. Thyssenkrupp previously had already delivered an ammonia plant not linked to renewables for the Louisiana site.
“Following the recent delivery of two world-scale ammonia and fertilizer plants to CF Industries we are honored to have now been selected by our long-term customer to contribute to the decarbonisation of their operations and to support them in their mission to provide clean energy to feed and fuel the world sustainably,” said Dennis Lippmann, president chemical & process technologies at Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions USA.
Thyssenkrupp in recent months has also won orders to install an 88MW electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen at a hydro-power plant of Canadian energy group Hydro-Québec, and is slated to develop a 20MW electrolyser for green hydrogen and ammonia for Saudi Arabia’s Neom future city.
The German company is trying to establish the supply of electrolysis equipment and services as a lucrative new business area, also to compensate for massive losses at its steel-making unit.
“This second water electrolysis success after the recent announcement of an installation in Canada shows the region’s leading role in making the green hydrogen economy a real deal,” said Christoph Noeres, head of green hydrogen at Thyssenkrupp’s Uhde Chlorine Engineers unit.
“With our well-established local set-up, we are best prepared to serve the American market which is also key to delivering customised service solutions throughout the entire plant life-cycle.”
