The flagship of a new energy storage vessel concept designed as an alternative to conventional offshore wind export cables could be operating off Japan inside three years, following the signing of a deal between classification body ClassNK and start-up PowerX.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the pair, Tokyo-headquartered ClassNK will run the rule over PowerX’s innovative ‘power transfer vessel’ (PTV), with a view to having a prototype in the water by 2025.
