Furniture giant IKEA in its Swedish home market is starting to sell certified electricity from solar and wind plants, its parent INGKA Group said.

Clients will be able to use an app to track their own electricity usage. Customers who have already bought solar panels from IKEA can also track their own production in the app and sell back the electricity they don’t use themselves.

The retailer is already selling solar panels in 11 markets.

“At IKEA, we want to become fully circular and climate positive by 2030, built on renewable energy and resources,” said Jan Gardberg, new retail business manager at Ingka Group.

“We believe the future of energy is renewable and we want to make electricity from sustainable sources more accessible and affordable for all.”

Ingka is no stranger to renewable energy, having invested €2.5bn ($2.94bn) in more than 1.7GW of wind and solar power across 14 countries since 2009, and it now generates 132% more clean energy than it uses.

The company by 2025 hopes to offer customers in all of its markets the option to use and generate renewable energy through its services.

“Today we offer smart and energy efficient products and services that contribute to prolonging the life of products, reducing waste, saving water, and eating more healthily, as well as reducing electricity usage,” IKEA Sweden sales manager Bojan Stupar said.

“Providing solar and wind power at a low price to more people feels like the natural next step on our sustainability journey.”
