English Premier League football club Manchester City will become a global face of climate action under a deal with green power developer Masdar.

Manchester City – the reigning Premier League champions and table-toppers in the current season, whose fans' best-known chant is "blue moon" – will work with Masdar on a range of activities “including the launch of a new global campaign, aimed at raising awareness on the importance of climate action and mitigating climate change”, said a statement.

Like Masdar, Manchester City is backed by Abu Dhabi, where the developer is based and whose ruling family have owned the football club since 2008, transforming it through massive investments from English league also-rans to one of the world’s best known.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said: “Climate change is the defining issue of our time, which affects us all. By working together to raise awareness, educate and take action, we can turn this global challenge into an opportunity.

“Manchester City Football Club is one of the biggest names in world football and Masdar is now one of the biggest players in clean energy.”

Masdar aims to build a 50GW-plus global renewable project portfolio by 2030.
