European utilities body Eurelectric has hired metals sector lobbyist Cillian O’Donoghue as its new policy director.

O’Donoghue, previously director of climate and energy at Eurometaux, has worked on energy and climate legislation for over ten years, including on the EU’s emissions trading system and state aid frameworks, as well as on industrial electrification.

“Cillian has a strong track record in advocacy and extensive knowledge of energy, climate and industrial policies,” said Eurelectric secretary genera Kristian Ruby.

“With a background in energy-intensive industry, he is very well-suited to spearhead the electrification agenda at a time where energy security and prices aspects of Europe’s quest for climate neutrality see increased focus”.

O’Donoghue added: "I am pleased to join Eurelectric at a time of accelerated transformation. I am looking forward to working with power sector experts toward achieving the energy transition, while ensuring that the benefits of electrification are supported by stable regulatory frameworks."

During his give years at Eurometaux, O’Donoghue lobbied on behalf of the non-ferrous metals industry in various forums and led advocacy campaigns for the sector. Prior to this, O’Donoghue worked in the climate and energy practice of global marketing and public relations agency Fleishman Hillard.
