The EU unveiled new guidelines over how member states can support the energy transition while staying within state aid rules, winning plaudits from the wind industry for allowing technology-specific auctions – but signalling a "pragmatic" exception for gas from measures to clamp down on fossil fuel support.

The European Commission on Tuesday published guidance over what is allowed under the bloc’s market rules as its 27 member states ramp-up their decarbonisation efforts with larger and more frequent competitions for public support of renewables and other clean energy initiatives in pursuit of 2050 net zero ambitions.
