A new record of around 39GW in solar capacity is expected to be added in the EU this year, industry group SolarPower Europe said as the European Commission proposed voluntary reductions in gas use to avoid rationing during the next winter in the wake of Russian energy export curtailment.

Expected PV installations would top a decade-long record in 2021 of 27GW, and also be higher than the 29.9GW expected to be added this year in SolarPower Europe’s pre-war estimate.

The group stressed that 39GW of additional solar power replaces the equivalent of 4.6
