US utility operator Xcel Energy is seeking regulatory approval to develop the largest solar PV array in the state of Minnesota with a unit of National Grid, a $575m investment that would partly replace coal-fired generation scheduled for early retirement.

Minneapolis-based Xcel proposes to have the 460MW Sherco facility in full commercial operation in 2024, another step toward its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2030 (from 2005 levels).
