Oil supermajor BP made its biggest single move yet to add renewable energy capacity as it swooped for a 9GW portfolio of US solar projects.

BP will pay independent group 7X Energy $220m for the under-development projects, in a move that instantly propels the oil & gas group’s renewables pipeline to 23GW.

UK-based BP is chasing a 50GW net renewables development goal by 2030 that is among the most ambitious of any fossil group globally, and an interim 20GW by 2025, with a focus so far on solar and offshore wind.
