BP is planning to set up a retail power business in the US, in another sign of the deeper penetration of the world’s oil majors into the global electricity sector.

The UK supermajor in a filing with US federal energy regulator FERC said its BP Energy Retail unit “intends to sell electricity products directly to commercial and industrial customers and residential customers”.

BP Energy Retail is initially targeting activities in Illinois, Ohio, Texas, California, and Pennsylvania, and is currently applying for relevant licenses in those states, it said in the filing that seeks relevant authorisations from FERC.
