President Joe Biden said he remains hopeful of bridging differences with Senator Joe Manchin after the West Virginia Democrat rejected their party’s flagship $2 trn Build Back Better bill partly aimed at reasserting US leadership on climate.

“Some people think maybe I’m not Irish because I don’t hold a grudge,” Biden said at the White House. “Senator Manchin and I are going to get something done."

How they could reach a compromise is unclear after a year of party infighting over the bill’s size and scope, and ill feeling toward Manchin among ascendant left-leaning progressive Democrats in Congress and Biden himself.
