Malaysia, the world’s largest exporter of palm oil and the second-largest producer, has been eyeing a biofuels mandate for more than four years. But popular opposition to any price hike in the country’s heavily subsidised fuel prices has made the move politically unpalatable.
The Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry has now dictated that oil companies, including state-owned firm Petronas, will have to subsidise biofuel blends at the pump.
