The plant, with annual capacity of 100 million gallons (378.5 million litres), is shut down and “will remain idle until the extent of the damage is known,” Seattle-based Imperium says in a statement.
The 10,000 gallon, heated glycerine tank ruptured because of over-pressurization. “As a result of the rupture, heated glycerin in the tank mixed with the cold air creating a large vapor plume,” the company says.
