Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power announced last month it had acquired the proposed project in East Texas from American Renewables for an undisclosed sum.
A ceremonial ground-breaking was held this week. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2012. Southern pegs the cost at $475m-$500m.
Minnesota-based Fagen has already signed up several other contractors to handle various elements of the project:
Zachry Engineering is the design engineer, handling overall site design, balance of plant engineering and coordination.
Metso Power will engineer, supply, build and commission the plant’s huge bubbling fluidized bed biomass boiler and distributed control system.
