The conditional loan guarantee, through the US Department of Energy, would help finance two 1.1 gigawatt Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors at an existing energy facility in Georgia. The project -- whose sponsors are Georgia Power Company, a unit of utility giant Southern Company; Oglethorpe Power Corporation; the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia; and the City of Dalton, Georgia -- still must be approved by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
