Facebook signed a deal for 200MW of Texas wind power as the social networking giant underlined its track record as a major buyer of renewable energy.

Facebook will take part of the output from the 525MW Aviator Wind project in Coke County when it enters service next year, said developer Apex and owner Ares Infrastructure and Power.

The partners said they also have a corporate buyer in place for most of the remaining capacity at Aviator Wind, claimed to be “the largest single-phase, single-site wind project in the US”.

Facebook is the largest US buyer of corporate renewables with 2.2GW under contract by the end of 2018, according to a recent study by Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

The group is one of a clutch of technology giants driving the growth of renewables in the corporate sector, which the study said was only just in its early stages.

“As part of our goal to support 100% of our operations with renewable energy, we want to help drive the energy transition and increase access to wind and solar power around the world,” said Urvi Parekh, renewable energy manager at Facebook. “This project will be an important part of successfully reaching our targets.”
