Wind and solar power took centre stage at the Eurelectric Power Summit in Florence this week — despite being rarely discussed.

The European electricity industry has now embraced renewables to the point where there is no longer any debate that the future power system will be carbon-neutral and driven by variable wind and solar. Discussion at the industry body’s annual conference instead focused on how to speed up both the transition to renewables and the electrification of the transport, heat and industrial sectors.
