Vestas narrowly edged General Electric in 2012 to retain its position as the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer, while leading Chinese competitors lost market share after two years of climbing the global rankings, according to MAKE consulting.

It says that Vestas would have lost its number one position to GE, had all of GE’s 2012 projects in Brazil been connected to the grid.

GE’s record year in the US and growth in emerging Europe, Middle East and Africa markets were instrumental in moving the industrial giant from global number five to number two, MAKE adds.

MAKE’s study differs from those earlier this year by BTM and IHS Emerging Energy Research that showed GE as the market leader, followed by Vestas.
