This week’s decision to award planning permission for the 1.8GW Hornsea Project Two development in the North Sea is a vital signal from the UK government, showing at last the beginnings of an industrial strategy based around low-carbon technology.
The European offshore wind market saw a dip in grid-connections in the first half of 2016. After a record-year in 2015 with 3.3GW of new capacity feeding into the grids, a modest 525MW was connected in the first six months of 2016.

Onshore wind is now among the UK’s cheapest sources of new power generation, and by 2020, it is expected to be the cheapest. But how many consumers know this? Does your partner know? Or your neighbour? Probably not…

Oil & gas companies are professing that the natural-gas and solar industries should be partners, working together supposedly to mutual benefit. It is a strategy that should be avoided by all solar companies able to do so — which is to say all those not owned by oil & gas companies.

I guess you could say I’ve got some history with batteries. Growing up on a farm, there were times when a fence needed fixing or a field had to be temporarily divided. So my Dad would carry a lumpy battery pack up the fields to set up an electric fence. I don’t remember much except that any nosy sheep that got too close jumped back pretty quickly.
