Developer EDP Inovação has tapped Axys Technologies to deploy its WindSentinel resource assessment platform as part of a European floating wind turbine demonstration project off Portugal.

The buoy-shaped device, which uses a three-beam Vindicator III simultaneous pulse Lidar to measure wind speed, wind direction, and turbulence at turbine hub-height and across the blade span, will be moored this summer in some 40 metres of water 6km offshore as part of the EU-funded multinational Demowfloat Initiative.

“This [is] a groundbreaking initiative aimed at significantly reducing the cost of offshore wind,” states Axys chief executive Terry Tarle.

“This will be our first European deployment for the WindSentinel, which is representative of the unprecedented work being undertaken by the Demowfloat team.”
